UFC 107 Review

This past Saturday BJ "The Prodigy" Penn extended his reign as UFC Lightweight Champion by dismantling number-one-contender Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez (above). The momentum shifted towards Penn right from the start, flooring the Nightmare and rocking him with several shots on the ground. Props to ref Herb Dean who was all over the action and allowed the fight to continue. Unfortunately for Sanchez, there would be little offensive success for the next twenty plus minutes of action, at least not on his part. The fight was stopped by doctors in the middle of the fifth round after BJ opened Diego's forehead with a kick and followed it up with a series of short uppercuts.

Penn once again showed that he's the best fighter in the world at 155 lbs. He stuffed and sprawled his way out of all 24of Diego's take-down attempts throughout the fight and credited Manny Pacquiao's influence in the post fight press conference for his striking advantage, which landed at a whooping 70%.

The Nightmare shouldn't have lost any fans for his effort. Despite being battered to a pulp for nearly 23 minutes Diego never gave up and showed his warrior spirit. In the post fight press conference UFC president Dana White said, “In 10 years of being in this business, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anybody more busted up than Diego is right now." 

Fedor, Total Fucking Star

There are few "one name" athletes in the world.  Golf has Tiger, basketball has Jordan, hockey has Gretzky, and MMA has Fedor. The baddest man on the planet is making sponsorship moves over seas, and if I may say, he is the perfect spokesman for chocolates of any kind. Someone give the marketing people at Gatorade this guys number, I hear their go-to has been in a bit of trouble lately.

MMA Alert: Penn vs Sanchez

 

This weekend MMA fans are in for a treat as one of the game's greatest champions BJ "The Prodigy" Penn attempts to defend his belt against hungry number-one-contender Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez. Penn is a living legend in the sport and hasn't lost at 155 lbs in nearly 8 years. Sanchez is a cardio machine that won't stop moving forward after the first bell sounds. The bout is almost enough to help us forget that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was supposed to be fighting in his hometown against "Sugar" Rashad Evans, but 'Page went Hollywood on us instead. 

The card also features ex-heavyweight champion Frank Mir in a clash of styles against French striker Cheick Kongo. Mir has spent most of the build up to the fight talking about having a third fight with Brock Lesnar, who's set to face Shane Carwin as soon as doctors give him the green light. The few times Mir has acknowledged Kongo to the media it's been to insult his ground game and English speaking abilities.

Kongo was last beaten by unanimous decision against Cain Velasquez, though he took that fight on short notice and was promised a title shot had he won the bout. He dropped Velasquez several times in the match but was unable to keep the fight off the mat against the ex-Arizona State wrestler. The winner of tomorrow nights match is immediately thrown in with the top contenders in the division.

The third fight from the top will be Kenny "Ken Flo" Florian against Clay "The Carpenter" Guida.  Sometimes you wonder if Kenny is so pretentious that his eye brows are stuck the way they are, making it appear as if everything he stares at is inadequate. None the less Ken Flo and the Carpenter are two technical fighters with great gas tanks so it should be another great scrap.
