We've featured Kentucky freshman point guard John Wall previously (click here) and he's back again, but this time it's Lebron James who's gushing, "He's great," the Cavs mega-star said last Friday. "He'll be the No. 1 pick in the draft."
LeBron developed a relationship with the Kentucky guard when Wall attended the MVP's basketball camp in Akron, OH over the past few summers (LeBron is from Akron). James has had a chance to play with and observe Wall play.
"His speed with the ball. He's like Derrick Rose," James said. "Derrick is much stronger than he is, but he has some of the same athleticism that Derrick has and Coach Cal is going to let those type of guys play. He has shown why he came out being the top player in high school and is one of the top five players in college."
In high school Wall was cut from the basketball team because he had a shitty attitude to which James commented. "He won't be cut again, unless he's in a barber's chair."
We appreciate LeBron's attempt at humor, but he should stick to basketball and leave the one-liners for real professionals like Dane Cook.
UPDATE: If you weren't a believer when we first wrote about John Wall being the best player in NCAA basketball maybe last night's performance convinced you? Calipari's Wildcats played Calhoun's Huskies and the freshman-phenom put on another epic performance at Madison Square Garden. Wall scored 25 points including clutch baskets late in the 4th quarter to secure a 614-61 victory.
Dick Vitale called the game court-side and he compared Wall to Usain Bolt because of his blazing speed and argued that although he loves Derek Rose, Wall is a superior basketball player. This Kentucky teams reminds me of Calipari's Memphis team two years ago. It was like watching an NBA team play a college team. Only this year, Kentucky has John Wall and I believe he's going to pull off a "Carmelo Anthony" ... one season, one championship, first-round pick in the draft.
It was obvious, even before John Wall signed his letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Kentucky, that he was NBA talent. Now that Wall has had a chance to showcase his skills at the college level it's pretty obvious he'll be the #1 pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Wall is a gifted point-guard averaging 18 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists per game. Last night the 5th ranked Wildcats pulled out a 68-66 win over the 10th ranked Tar Heels after Wall iced the game with two big free throws. After the game Tar Heels head coach, Roy Williams, said, "He's the best point guard out of high school since Jason Kidd."
Williams continued, "I recruited Jason Kidd after the '91 Final Four, so that's (18-19 years)," Williams said. "He's 6-4, he's got blazing speed and he's going to be a vicious defender. He will start stealing the ball two or three times a game. His biggest weakness is his outside shot. What's the easiest thing to change? Your outside shot."
Wall was never offered a scholarship by UNC, which probably made the win even sweeter for him. The win last night isn't the first time Wall has got the better of the Tar Heels. Below is a video from a summer league game where Wall dunks over UNC alum, Jerry Stackhouse. Shwap!
